Creem
Legendary rock ‘n’ roll magazine Creem is coming back to print for the first time after 33 years. The rough, gritty, Detroit-based answer to Rolling Stone Magazine’s laid-back Californian vibes, Creem’s original run lasted from 1969 to 1989, and became a rock history landmark for housing influential writers – Lester Bangs, Patti Smith and Cameron Crowe, to name just a few – and for championing many then-alternative genres such as heavy metal, punk rock and new wave.Along with the title, another entity is risen from the dead: the magazine’s original mascot, Boy Howdy!, created by cartoonist Robert Crumb. He is the star of a rollicking animated film that is the centerpiece of the relaunch campaign, helmed by rising indie agency fable.works. Directed by Mateus de Paula Santos and Thiago Martins, the spot features no less than 69 references to music icons, from Aretha to Zappa, whom our hero meets along the way as he takes a fever dream-like journey back from the clutches of death.
